About
NFL Coaching Tree maps the genealogy of professional football coaching — who trained under whom, how careers evolved, and the connections that shaped the game.
The Data
Our database covers 3,303 coaches across 61 franchises, with coaching staff records spanning from 1920 to 2025.
Coaching staff data is scraped from publicly available sources around the web and updated periodically to reflect current-season changes.
How It Works
A coaching "tree" is built by tracing the assistant coaches who served under a head coach and later became head coaches themselves. When Coach B serves as an assistant under Head Coach A, and Coach B later becomes a head coach, that creates a branch in Coach A's coaching tree.
These relationships reveal the lineage of coaching philosophies across the NFL — from Bill Walsh's West Coast Offense tree to Bill Parcells' defensive coaching dynasty.
